Restoration of Suleyman Pervane Madrasa (2006)
About the Project
The Madrasa, registered in the name of the Sultan Alaaddin Foundation, with a surface area of 1045.93 m2, is located north of the Alaaddin Mosque in the central district of Sinop Province, plot (6), island (81), parcel (10).
The Süleyman Pervane Madrasa was built by the Seljuk Vizier Muinüddin Süleyman Pervani in 1262. The Madrasa is known by names such as Alaüddin Madrasa and Alaiye Madrasa. During the wars between the Anatolian Seljuk Sultan Kılıç Aslan and II. İzzüddin Keykavus, the Trapezuntine Emperor Manuel I briefly captured Sinop. Süleyman Muinüddin Pervane recaptured Sinop and had this madrasa built in the city center in commemoration of this event. The madrasa is rectangular in plan and made of rubble and cut stone. Rooms are lined up on both sides of the single-story madrasa courtyard in the entrance iwan. The main iwan opposite the entrance was converted into a classroom in 1889. There are doors on either side of the entrance iwan. The door on the right leads to a small garden where the tomb of Altınbaş Gazi Çelebi, the Bey of Sinop, grandson of Muinüddin Süleyman Pervane and son of Mesud Çelebi, is located. Above the entrance iwan is a triangular inscription, seven lines long, written in fine Seljuk Naskh script and surrounded by floral decorations. This inscription states that Sinop was invaded fifty years after its capture by the Seljuk Sultan İzzüddin Keykavus I in 611 (1214) and was recaptured by Süleyman Pervane.
Inscription:
“May Allah grant him a good end. When the task of taking Sinop from the wicked infidels was accomplished through the efforts of Suleyman, son of Ali, son of Mehmet, who clung to the true religion with all his might, acted in accordance with the word of Allah, and was in need of Allah’s forgiveness, he ordered the construction of this blessed madrasa. Its completion coincided with the months of the year 661 (1262).”
The madrasa does not have any remarkable architectural features. However, it is important because it is the only madrasa built in Sinop. The madrasa was used as the Sinop Museum between 1941 and 1970. It was restored in 2006.
