Guatemala Anatolian Themed 280 m² Ceramic Panel
Located in Guatemala City, the capital of Guatemala, this enormous ceramic panel with an Anatolian theme is an important symbol of cultural and diplomatic relations between Turkey and Guatemala.
This project was carried out within the scope of cultural diplomacy studies, generally conducted by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA).
Location and Purpose
Location: The panel is located on the exterior of the Guatemalan Ministry of Foreign Affairs building in Guatemala City, one of the country’s most important diplomatic centers.
Purpose: To promote the presence of the Republic of Turkey in Guatemala and the rich cultural heritage of Anatolia; and to strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two countries. Its placement on the facade of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building emphasizes this diplomatic purpose.
Characteristics of the Panel and Ceramic Art
Size: As the name suggests, the panel covers an area of approximately 280 square meters (some sources also state 285 m²). With its dimensions, it holds the distinction of being the largest tile panel in Central America.
Theme: The theme of the panel is “Anatolia.” In this context, traditional motifs inspired by different civilizations (Seljuk, Ottoman, etc.) and regions of Anatolia have been used.
Motifs:
Seljuk Stars and Geometric Patterns: Geometric ornaments representing harmony and eternity.
Ottoman Flower Motifs: Particularly floral motifs, indispensable in Ottoman tile art, such as tulips, carnations, and hyacinths.
Colors: Vibrant colors such as turquoise, cobalt blue, red, and green, used in traditional Iznik tile art, are dominant.
Production Process: All the tiles used in the panel were produced in Turkey, transported to Guatemala, and assembled there. The project was carried out by Turkish tile masters.
